Police say the crash was head on and Shirley Rust, 58, was pinned in her car. Emergency crews used the jaws of life to free her. She was in extremely critical condition before passing away in the hospital hours later.
Police arrested Herbert Vaughn, 23, Tuesday afternoon in Colorado Springs following an hours long search. Vaughn allegedly fled the scene, leaving his car in the middle of the road. Tuesday morning on Mark Dabling Boulevard, just north of Garden of the Gods Road in Colorado Springs. According to witnesses, Vaughn was driving northbound in a white Chevrolet pick up truck on Mark Dabling. Police say the truck ran off of the right side of the roadway and struck a guard rail. The truck then over corrected and crossed into the southbound lanes and hit Rust’s green Chrysler Concord head on.
Witnesses estimate the speed of both vehicles at approximately the posted speed limit of 35 mph.
Police officers were searching for the suspect with K9 Units after the crash. Vaughn was located with the help of citizens of the Rockrimmon neighborhood who called in several sightings. He was apprehended and taken into custody about two hours after the accident at the Whispering Hills Apartments off Rockrimmon Road, near the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, in Colorado Springs.
According to court documents, Vaughn had a warrant out for his arrest for failure to appear for a traffic violation.
He now faces several charges, including felony hit and run and careless driving involving death.
The family of Shirley Rust tells 11 News she was on her way to work when the accident happened. Her family says she was a ‘wonderful mother and grandmother.’ She leaves behind her husband, three adult sons, and more than a dozen grandchildren.
