Today nearly 100 students from Morgan County High School participated in the fourth annual One Day Without Shoes campaign, an event sponsored by TOMS shoes. The event honors people in third world countries who do not have the luxury of shoes.
Walking barefoot might be a seasonal luxury for citizens of Morgan County, but this is not the case in places where shoes are unavailable. As stated in the TOMS website, millions of children in impoverished countries go without shoes every day, which puts them at risk of serious infection and disease.
Since Christmas, TOMS shoes have been a trendy style at the high school. Many students are impressed with the fact that TOMS donates one pair of shoes for every pair that is purchased from the company. "It is like getting a two for one deal, only sharing at the same time," stated junior Julia Whitaker. Students feel that by walking barefoot they will attract the attention and raise the awareness of other people, who may in turn join the cause.
